What Causes Pain In Ankle?

For a week now my left ankle has hurt on the outside of the joint,@2:30 this morning it woke me up aching badly,went to work and cannot bend ankle without pain shooting up the side of my shin bone,there is no swelling or bruising and I have not injured it.
