What Causes Pain In Chest After Having Cool Drinks?

Every time I drink a fizzy drink like Coca-Cola or Pepis I get a strange pain in my chest. I do a lot off running and exercise but I don t get such pains. It s just when I m eating or drinking. Perhaps I m allergic to something? My dad died of a heart attack and my Grandma lives without function in the left side of her body due to a stroke. So I have family history. Does fizzy drinks affect my heart?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post can be attributed to:
1. Gastrointestinal cause- due to accumulation of gas and excess acid formation in stomach.
Appearance of pain on drinking fizzy drinks is suggestive of the same.
Symptomatic relief can be obtained with intake of Proton pump inhibitors like Pantoprazole, which prevent acid formation in stomach (to be taken before meals)+ antacid gel (to be taken after meals).

2. Spasm of the chest muscles- management will involve application of muscle relaxant gel & intake of analgesic (like Diclofenac) + Pantoprazole preparation.

However, considering the fact that you have a family history of heart diseases, an ECG should be done to rule out any Cardiovascular cause for the symptoms.

So, kindly consult your Doctor and start treatment as advised.
There is no need to worry, you will be fine.
Take care.
