General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is possible the pain may be due to nerve related causes, neuralgia.

Causes of neuralgia are: (1) vitamin b12 or folate deficiency
(2)diabetes
(3)liver or kidney disease
(4)exposure to toxins
(5)neurological diseases such as ms, stroke
(6)infections
(7)idiopathic- cause not known

He should have blood tests (vitamin levels, screening for diabetes, liver or kidney disease) to see if any of these may be contributing to his pain

I hope this helps
