What Causes Pain In Ear Radiating Towards Chest And Congestion?

I have a slight ear ache (left ear feels full) and pain from under my ear all the way down into my chest... No fever, no other congestion- I coughed up brown/green phlegm this morning...bad virus/ bronchitis going around my school... Should I get a chest X-ray?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of pain in ear radiating towards chest and congestion. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query , but in your case it seems to me that the symptoms are due to sore throat , it can be bacterial or viral . Chest infection can also be one of the reason. Also infection has traveled from sore throat to ear through Eustachian tube. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper examination . Doctor may order throat swab test and blood test along with examination with laryngoscope and otoscope . Doctor may prescribe antibactrial ( amoxicillin or penicillin ) , anti viral ( acyclovir ) along with anti allergic and decongestant . For now do warm saline gargles and take steam . Taking steam will help alot . Doctor may also refer you to chest specialist for chest infection or cardiologist for condition like angina.
