What Causes Pain In Ear?

I went to new doc today because of extreme pains in my right ear. He said ears are fine and prescribed Valltrex - 1 gram 3 x a day. Said he thought it was some type of neuro shingles virus. I had shingles vaccine 1 year ago last February. Can this diagnosis be true?
