What Causes Pain In Face When Suffering From Temporomandibular Joint?

Hi, I have TMJ. I have had it for years so i am used to it. However, a couple of days ago the right side of my face was hurting. Whenever I would move a muscle or touch my face it would hurt as if someone had slapped me really hard. The next day that pain was gone but now whe. Move my jaw side to side i hear a squishing sound underneath my right ear by my jaw joint. Plus, my jaw and right neck area hurt really bad. I have no other symptoms and i haven t been sick. This is really bothering me. Any ideas what it could be?

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

As per your complain it seems that along with TMJ there is also some disorder associated with the TRIGEMINAL NERVE and the symptoms of severe pain on one side of face while slight touching and moving the jaw can be due to TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA..
The pain in jaw and neck can be due to stiffness and inflammation in the muscles due to TMJ.
You should consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and in case if Trigeminal Neuralgia is diagnosed CARBAMAZIPINE is the drug of choice for reducing pain..
There are certain second line drugs like Gabapantin, lamotrigene, baclofen can be prescribed..
Surgical treatment modalities like Gama Knife surgery or Microvascular Decompression can be done as per the requirement advised by Neurosurgeon..
For neck and jaw pain you can take a combination of painkiller and muscle relaxant like Flexon-MR or Nucoxia MR..

Hope this helps..

Thanks and regards..
