What Causes Pain In Feet And Heels?

The underneath of my feet are very painful especially in mornings or after sitting down. It started with pain in heels on and off throughout the day but now when I first get out of bed or up from a sitting position it s really painful to take the first step. I have had to start using a walking stick to try and ease the pain. Is there anything I can do before I go to my GP?
