What Causes Pain In Groin Area When Lifting Leg?

I am having stabbing pain the groin area when lifting the leg to get in the car. If I am sitting on the floor with legs out I am unable to lift the leg due to the pain at the groin joint. Any other time there is no pain. It occurs only when I try to use it.
