Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been having pain in my hip for months now and am concerned for cancer as I am a breast cancer survivor. If this was cancer in the bone would there be more symptons. I do not have any pain elsewhere and am very thin around 100 pounds. I do jog with my dog in the evening.
I understand your concern, and unfortunately most of the time if cancer has spread to the bone, pain is the only feature. There can be other things like loss of appetite and loss of weight, but that is unreliable and only noticeable in the late stages.
What would be more suggestive of bone metastases is a constant deep ache rather than mechanical pain, which means that the pain would be present no matter what you do. They also tend to be more noticeable at night when you sleep. Joint wear or strain would typically worsen with activity when you jog or walk, and lessen when at rest or lying down.
The pain has been persistent for quite a long time, and I would suggest that you go and get it checked out at your local doctors. They will probably perform a simple X-ray of the hip to see what is going on, and they can even do a blood test for alkaline phosphatase to see if there is any bone destruction, which would suggest that there is cancer invading the bone.
Hope this helps, and all the best to you.
Regards, Dr. Teh
