Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
The left side of my jaw is hard to open when I go to eat. Also my left ear starts vibrating like a guitar string. Not sure what may be causing this and if I need to go to primary care or ENT or nothing to worry about. I did have gamma knife in 2013 for an acoustic neuroma right ear and menigenoma on left side of brain. Do you have any suggestions?
I can understand your concern. It seems that you have developed a TMJ problem (Temporomandibular Joint). This joint is located near ear and it helps in opening and closing of jaw along with side to side movements.
If this joint is dislocated, subluxated or associated muscle is not functioning well, you may feel difficulty in opening the jaw along with problems related to ear as the joint is near ear. Sometimes, an impacted lower third molar can cause infection of the gum surrounding it and can cause such problem.
I would advise you to visit an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for examination of the joint along with x-ray and CT Scan of the area to diagnose the problem. Specific treatment can be advised after the examination and test results. If third or wisdom molar is causing the trouble, then its extraction should be performed.
If you are in too much pain right now, you can take Acetaminophen 500 mg up to thrice a day. I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. I wish you feel better soon.
Best, Dr. Viraj Shah
