What Causes Pain In Knees And Hips On Sitting For Long Periods?

Hello, I am a 43 year old woman, I am 6 feet 5 inches tall and 390 lbs. I work as a medical transcriptionist and so I am sitting for prolonged periods of time, when I get up to go to the restroom or get a drink I have pain over my knees and in the area of my hips, what might be the cause of this? Also I have tried walking/exercising more thinking maybe that would help but after I do that the next morning I am so sore I cannot hardly move, any idea of what might be going on? At night, my left knee or the area around my knee throbs and hurts making it tough to get comfortable to go to sleep. I have not had any injuries that I am aware of that would cause this kind of pain. I have not fallen nor have I been doing any heavy lifting etc. Please help!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Thanks for asking a question at HCM

I'm here to answer your question and help you.

I suspect 4 reasons for the stiff and painful joints,

1. Overweight. You need to decrease your weight
2. Lack of exercise. You need to see that you get up every hour and walk for 5 to minutes and sit again for work. Regular exercise and Physiotherapy helps
3. Osteoarthritis, this can be detected in x ray and can be treated accordingly
4. Inflammation due to rheumatic causes. Meet a Rheumatologist, take his opinions. Get tests like RA factor, ESR, and ANA antibodies done.

Hope this helps

Best Regards
Dr Chaithanya
