What Causes Pain In Left Breast Upon Coughing Or Sneezing?

I had laryngitis 2-3 weeks ago. A side effect of this was a terrible hacking dry cough. The cough has almost gone now but I have an incredible pain beneath my left breast in the heart area. It feels like I've been kicked in the ribs (kind of bruised feeling) but when I cough or sneeze it literally feels like a wooden stake is spearing my heart! It really hurts. ibruprofen does help, but what is causing this. It hurts a bit to inhale and exhale too, but not as much as coughing or sneezing. I did go and see my GP half way through my Laryngitis but he said there wasn't anything to give me due to the nature of the illness being a virus. Not sure what to do now.
