What Causes Pain In Left Upper Shoulder Radiating Towards Left Arm And Back?

I got pain on my left upper shoulder, probably the shoulder blade. There s a particular spot, when pressed, hurts the most. I wonder if it s the trigger or pressure point. I had gone to a physiotherapist today, the first time in my life, she assessed me & then for 15 minutes a machine did work on my neck & that pressure point. Felt good for an hour or two. Now when I m doing nothing I can feel the pain coming back at that spot. My neck feels tired & hurts a little too. Would like to let you know this pain started at one of my fitness workouts at the gym. Have been having it for 3 weeks. Pain relief ointments like Voltaren don t help. Hot showers give a little relief. At times the pain radiates to my entire left arm & my middle (mainly), ring & index finger. This pain also radiates to my entire upper back shoulder at times. Certain movements increase the pain. A back triceps curl and a bicep curl is killing. Oh what pain at the back shoulder (left). Also overhead activities at home or anywhere gives me pain. Please help!!!

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have pain in left upper shoulder radiating towards left arm and back . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like muscle spasm , cervical spondylosis, TMJ problem , nerve compression , ear infection or heart problem like angina .

For now stay calm , take ibuprofen , apply warm compresses to shoulder and arm , do light stretching exercises under expert or acetaminophen for pain and take proper rest. You should consult to dentist for TMJ problem . For now eat light and soft , sleep in correct posture and try to reduce your stress level , as such pain can also occur due to stress , do stretching exercises for shoulder neck and back under expert .

I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper examination and treatment . Doctor may order CT scan , MRI along with nerve conduction test and physical examination to confirm the diagnosis . Doctor may prescribe muscle relaxant , anti inflammatory , nerve supplement along with physical therapy . Doctor may also refer you to cardiologist for condition like angina .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
