What Causes Pain In Little Finger Spreading To Entire Arm?

My little finger started hurting a week ago. Then the pain spread down into the edge of my hand. Now it is swollen and very painful. I have not injured it as far as I know. But this kind of pain has happen before, though never in the same area. And not always around joints. What could be causing this? I am 57 years old and female.
