What Causes Pain In Lower Back Radiating Down The Legs?

My 15 year old son lifted weights for a strong man competition on Saturday and then did cross fit today. He is crying in pain now, lower right back. says the pain goes down through his buttock to his leg. We have put ice on it and I have given him ibuprofen...anything else I can do?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have pain in lower back radiating down the legs . Well the symptoms you mention in query can occur due to may reasons , but in your case t seems to me that the symptoms are due to Sciatica . Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg . Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes pinched, usually by a herniated disk in your spine or by an overgrowth of bone . I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper examination . Doctor will take history and order CT scan, x-ray and MRI . Doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatories ,muscle relaxants and tricyclic antidepressants . Doctor may also recommend physical therapy or steroid injection . For now apply warm compresses to lower back and leg and take proper rest .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
