What Causes Pain In Lower Back With Tingling In Legs?

I'm having pretty bad back pain (lower back on the right side) and a sort of tingling in my leg). I don't have medical insurance right now but wanted to know if this was something serious? I have been referred to a orthopedic surgeon which I can not afford right now.
