What Causes Pain In Ribs Upon Breathing Deeply?

I m a 71 year old female and a week ago Friday I was helping my 93 year old father getting out a 50 pound grinder out of a low cabinet in his work shop and as I bent down to try and lift it up I felt something pop under my ribs on right side. I have had broken ribs years ago and remembered how it hurt to take a deep breath or coughing hurt but I don t hurt when I breathe or cough just hurts when I twist the wrong way or put pressure on it like trying to lay on my side or back. Could it possibly be a strained muscle?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Yes, Madam, you have rightly guessed. It appears to be a spasm in a back muscle. Fracture of ribs is unlikely as there is no history of direct injury or fall.
In the first 6-8 hours cold therapy would have cured you. Now a week has passed so now give hot fomentation to the area of pain ,take rest, don't lift any heavy load more than 5 Kg, apply icy hot cream. Take a tab of brufen after food, you will be fine. Tell me in 4-5 days if the problem still persists, an X-Ray may be required.
