What Causes Pain In Right Side Of Abdomen After Undergoing Laparoscopic Appendectomy?

Dear Dr.,I had a laparoscopic appendectomy approx. 14 days ago. I am experiencing pain on my right side (in the middle of the waist area). Everything else is fine, incisions look terrific and no fever, chills etc. Could this still be from the gas they pumped inside? The pain initially went away 5 days after surgery, but returned right before I was to fly home ( I was on vacation when this happened). I was surprised since I was pain free but thinking possibly I did too much before flying (packing, etc). I do realize that I did have surgery and have to be patient! I just wanted to know if this is normal pain after appendectomy. My primary care Dr. did not need to see me for a follow up when I got back in the States and said everything sounded fine. I guess I just want a second opinion. Thank you for your time.

Hello,

Pain after laparoscopic appendectomy is common and it goes away usually within 2 weeks. Sometimes it can take longer time like 4 weeks. You don't need to worry unless you have symptoms like high grade fever with chills, redness, swelling, bleeding, or other drainage from the incision site, vomiting, loss of appetite or unable to eat or drink anything, or absence of bowel movements for longer periods.

You can take Acetaminophen for pain relief. If the pain worsens, please do contact your surgeon for clinical examination.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
