What Causes Pain In Right Side Of Chest While On Iron Pills?

Hello the past few days i have been experiencing right side chest cramp like pains. A few days ago i started taking iron pills as my iron id only at a 4. I am starting to worry cause ive never had such pain,and it is starting to become bothersome. I do not know if it is from the iron pills or if i need to go to the er. Please give me some insight to what this may be. Thank you

Hi,

Thanks for posting in HCM.

I understand your concern that you are experiencing pain on the right side of the chest.

It could be due to acute gastritis caused due to consumption of iron pills.
Iron pills is known to be gastric irritant. Hence, it will cause damage to gastric mucosa leading to acute gastritis. This will result in experiencing cramp like pain in the chest.

You can do 2 things to overcome this.
1. Take Tablet.Pantoprazole 40mg once daily 30 minutes before food for 21 days.
2. Take Enteric coated iron capsules which is available instead of the regular iron capsules.

If you have difficulty in consuming it orally, you can take iron in intravenous injectable form.
