What Causes Pain In The Ankle After One Year Of Fracture?

I broke my ankle in 2 places about 1 1/2 years ago and I have a plate and 6 screws on the outside and 2 screws on the inside of my ankle- I was on the treadmill a couple of weeks ago and felt a slight pain - I finished my workout and when I went to get off it was hard to stand on it. Should I be concerned. It has bothered every since sometimes it feels better then others times it bothers me- I have been using a ankle wrap - should I go back to my orthopedic surgeron and have it looked at or is just normal?

Hello,

Your symptoms may be indicative of trauma, malunion, dislocation, implant breakage, arthrofibrosis, post traumatic ankle osteoarthritis, infection, etc. Your treatment will depend on the pathology that is causing symptoms. Take NSAIDs, one stat after food to get a little relieve. You should apply ankle wrap or crepe bandage to help it stay at rest.

Do not do any unnecessary walking. Stay at rest with ankle raised on a stool while sitting and on a pillow when you are on bed. Take an appointment with your surgeon at the earliest & get a clinical check-up done along with imaging tests like (X-ray, CT or MRI if required). Do not stay at home, get it assessed and evaluated so that treatment can be started before symptoms worsen.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
