What Causes Pain In The Arm After Receiving An Intramuscular Injection?

Hi, My mum received an IM injection at the Dr s earlier today into her right arm. Once given the nurse stated that the injection should not have been administered as it had been discontinued. Since the injection mums arm is incredibly painful around the injection site and she is unable to move it. Is this likely to be an issue with the procedure? i don t know the name of the drug, bit it was given as my mum has reduced kidney function and she thinks the drug ended with the word coccle?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and understood the concerns.
Since you do not know the name of injection, it will be difficult for me to guide you for the continuation or stopped medication.
Well if the Specialist has prescribed the injection, it is lease likely to have been into the banned category; how is it possible that the Nurse knew it but not the
Doctor did not.
Well the pain and the inability to move the arm indicates that the injection has either caused local irritation or a local hematoma formation or injury to the radial nerve.
This can be assessed by the following:
Local high resolution Ultrasound.
Nerve conduction studies.
Get started with symptomatic and specific treatment as per the findings.
Exercises if nerve problems. Rest if local problem.
Surgery if hematoma.
Have an urgent opinion and management.
