What Causes Pain In The Arms After Taking Levofloxacin?

I TOOK THE MEDICATION levofloxacin for walking pneumonia. On the third day I began to feel my arms feeling strange. I took the fourth and fifth pills anyway. My arms from the shoulder down begin to hurt very much. I could not raise my arms without extreme pain. I called my pharmacist and the said it could be my medicine. I went to see my doctor. All she did was to give me tramadol and wanted to go to physical therapy. that has been almost a month ago and my arms still hurt. For relief I just do nothing but rest them. I diagnosed myself with tendonitis. Am I correct and what do I do.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Suggestive of Levofloxacin induced tendinopathy. Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic commonly prescribed to treat susceptible bacterial infections. Its most common side effects include stomach upset, vomiting, photosensitivity, arthropathy, and tendinopathy which may result in rupture of the affected tendon.

Symptoms of fluoroquinolone-related tendinopathy can present within hours of starting treatment or up to 6 months after stopping the treatment, and recovery can be slower and require a less aggressive approach early in rehabilitation than for other types of tendinopathy.

However surgical intervention may be required if tendon rupture persists.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
