General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi there

There are a few options to consider.

The most important thing to rule out is cellulitis which is an infection, although this is unlikely because it has been present for months, it is still important for your doctor to rule this out as this is an emergency that requires antibiotics.

You haven't mentioned your age, assuming you are middle aged or older, something to consider is gout. This occurs due to high uric acid levels which promote urate crystals to deposit in tissues and joints. The crystals cause an inflammatory reaction which leads to visible swelling, redness and warm and tender joints. If you have these symptoms apply an ice pack, soak your leg in Epsom salts. You will still need to visit your doctor for a prescription. You will need anti inflammatories and colchine and once treated, you will need lifelong prevention with allopurinol if there are no contraindications. You can also control the symptoms by following a low purine diet.

Do visit your doctor for an assessment and possibly an X-ray.

Hope this helps.
