What Causes Pain In The Buttocks Upon Waking Up In The Morning?

This sounds like a joke, but it s not. I am 65, female. For the last three days, I have had a pain in my buttocks when I wake up in the morning. Last night it began during the night and was so painful it woke me up. The pain is on the left side right over the bone that you sit on. I tried stretching, moving into all different positions in bed, heating pad. Nothing helped. It feels like it might be a nerve. It goes away after I ve been up for a couple of hours. I have had sciatic pain on that side, but I don t feel the pain from the sciatic nerve going down to my bottom. It s only in my buttocks. Any ideas what I can do to relieve the pain?

Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is possible that you may have coccydynia. This is defined as inflammation and pain of the coccyx, which is essentially the tail bone.

Alternatively , some persons have pain in the buttocks related to sciatica. This means that though your sciatica does not normally affect you in this way, it may be having this effect.

Treatment involves: (1)an ice pack applied to the area 2 to 4 times daily for 15 to 20 mins
This is changed to a heat pad if the pain persist for longer than a few days.a

(2) anti inflammatory meds such as naproxen, cataflam, ibuprofen, voltaren

(3)avoid prolonged sitting, use a cushion when sitting or laying down

(4) if there is no improvement or the pain worsens then you may need an injection from your doctor

I hope this helps
