Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Pain In The Chest Radiating To The Back After Eating Almonds?
I ate a few handfuls of almonds, quite rapidly, and within a few minutes I had severe pain in the mid-breast area penetrating to the back, similar to a gallbladder attach. I thought I was having a heart attach. I took some alka seltzer, and the pain finally subsided, but it was sever enough to want to go to the hospital. I don t think the almonds were digesting, and now I am scared to eat nuts. I am 66, work out like a demon, in great health.
All your history is surely indicative of severe esophagitis or esophageal spasm that any nuts can cause but whenever there is chest pain with referred pain to the back pain 2 EKG should be done to rule out any cardiac problems. I would advise you the following in such a situation: Rush to ER to get EKG done. Take a PPI like OMeprazole. May need Domperidone. Continue Alka Seltzer when on empty stomach. Never take almonds in future and try to avoid other nuts. If all these things do not relieve the problem completely or there is any recurrence of similar attacks it is better to get an upper GI Endoscopy and further management as per the findings. Stop oily and spicy food. A control over anxiety and stress are important.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
