What Causes Pain In The Chest Radiating To The Back And Neck?

Last week I had crushing chest pains radiating to back, neck and jaw which woke me up from sleep. Two days after that I had a normal ekg, normal echo and equivocal stress test. Today I had a cta, results unknown, but doctor said the vessels look good. What can this be? This is the second time in 15 months that I have had this pain wake me from sleep

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
I understand and appreciate your question.

Brief Answer: Chest pain may be a symptom of a number of serious disorders and is, in general, considered a medical emergency. Some associated symptoms can include Chest pain that spreads to your jaw, left arm, or back.
Detailed Answer:
Certainly chest pain is not something to ignore. But you should know that it has many possible causes. Much of the cases do not relate to heart problems, such as anxiety and panic attacks. In these cases, medical examinations may be normal.
If you have again unexplained chest pain, the only way to confirm its cause is to have a doctor evaluate you. When in doubt, call your doctor about any chest pain you have, especially if it comes on suddenly. As the old saying goes, “It’s better to be safe than sorry.”
