What Causes Pain In The Joints Of The Hand?

I feel pain in the palm of my right hand (tendons? joints?) when I exert any pressure on my fingers, especially when all fingers are together (as in holding a heavy dish, pushing a door). The pain is not so much in my wrist.
Is this tendonitis? Or carpal tunnel? What should I do?
