What Causes Pain In The Knee Cap?

My right knee, on the outside right side of my knee cap is really hurting. Its really difficult an and painful to put weight on. Hard walking up and down steps. Feels like knee is going to lock up. When I press my fingertip into the outside right knee on right side of knee cap its very tender. Hurts. No injuries for sure. I started walking for exercise a few weeks back, but nothing major. I started off slow. Just cant figure out what is going on witb my knee. Any advice, I would appreciate
