What Causes Pain In The Left Chest, Back And Shoulder?

My partner had an ASD closure about 3 months ago and for the last two days he has had pain in the left chest, shoulder and back area. It comes and goes but hurts if he takes a deep breath or coughs or sneezes. He is seeing his GP tomorrow but should we take this more seriously??
