What Causes Pain In The Left Leg Upon Coughing?

WHEN I COUGH MY LEFT LEG HURTS. IT HAS BEEN DOING THIS FOR YEARS BUT IS GETTING WORSE. When i cough i have to get weight off that leg completely. my right leg is fine. My cough is very deep. and sometimes continuous without stopping for breath. I am 35, smoker, im on a inhaler, and i have some damage to my heart due to heart attack. Trying to see if all this could be related.

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Explain that it is important performing a comprehensive differential diagnosis between different possible causes that may lead to this clinical scenario:

-a possible bulging disc in the lumbar region, which is causing radicular pain in the left leg
-peripheral arteriopathy (considering your past medical history)
- chronic venous insufficiency.

For this reason, I would recommend performing a lumbar spine MRI study and a Doppler ultrasound of the leg blood vessels. You should discuss with your doctor on the above tests.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
