What Causes Pain In The Left Testicles?

Hi I had pain in my left testicle (or somewhere on the left side within scrotum). The doctor said it s mild epididymitis and prescribed antiinflamatory medicine and also Cefiroxime Axetil 500 (antibiotic). It worked very well and the pain disappeared completely in a day. The doctor checked after 5 days and he said the swelling is slowlly going away. I took the medicine for a total of 10 days. At the end the doctor checked again and said I was now good and prescribed another antibiotic of low power just to ensure there remains no residual infection. But again after 3-4 days, the pain reappeared in the same area. Later on I underwent sonography to check if there is any kidney stone and also sonography of scrotum (all as per urologist s advise). There was no stone... sonography was normal but it showed mild varicocele on left side... the urologist said it s nothing to worry about and no treatmemt needed. The urine test showed pus cells so he started antibiotics course. Somehow the initial cefuroxime axetil 500 worked really well and I have started it again as the pain did not completely stop. It was a mild pain though whenever it was there. Moreover, the urologist checked the epididymis on left testicle and said it s perfectly normal. But what I feel by touch is the epididymis on left testicle feels slightly detached from the testicle. Your advise please. In the mean time I am following natural therapy to heal the mild varicocele.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

This type of pain and location is suggestive of epididymitis which is inflammation of part of the testicle and this not uncommon in males especially at a young age. This is usually treated with 10 days of antibiotics, usually ciprofloxacin and there are no permanent consequences. Masturbation and intercourse should be avoided till pain persist, if possible since I may prolong inflammation course. Some more serious conditions such as tumors or torsion are rare but in doubtful cases you should do Doppler ultrasound or scintigraphy. In this particular case, I don’t think this is required and this should improve on antibiotic therapy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
