What Causes Pain In The Leg And Back?

My 12-year-old son received vaccinations last Thursday, Sept 28th. He experienced leg and back pain but said it felt like normal growing pains so we didn t think much of it. This past Thursday, October 5th, he had leg pain, back pain, and a fever of 102.6. Friday morning when he woke up he was still in pain and quite lethargic but the fever was gone. I expected that he would vomit during the night or wake with a bad cold since it s going around at school, but he didn t get sick or get a cold. His back and leg pain are gone but his neck has been stiff and he can t turn his head easily and he s very lethargic. Wondering if this could be simple side effects from his vaccines that will go away? Or should I be more concerned?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advise.

I do not think this is fever related to his vaccination.
It might be an unrelated viral illness.
I will explain you how a viral illness behaves so that you can be more confident.
Fever of few days without any localizing signs could as well a viral illness. Usually rather than fever, what is more important is the activity of the child, in between 2 fever episodes on the same day. If the kid is active and playing around when there is no fever, it is probably viral illness and it doesn't require antibiotics at all. Once viral fever comes it will there for 4-7 days. So do not worry about duration if the kid is active. Give Paracetamol, if fever is more than 100F. I suggest not using combination medicines for fever, especially with Paracetamol.

Hope I have answered your query.
