What Causes Pain In The Lower Back On The Left Side?

I have had pain in my lower left back since November. Initial diagnosis was SI joint and possible scoliosis (based on x-rays). Physical therapy and muscle relaxers were prescribed but did not help; neither have monthly therapeutic massages. The pain is constant and dull but can be sharp with certain movements. Looking for other suggestions. I am 50 years old and have never had back issues before.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Your concern over the unresolved issue even after orthopaedic(bone) diagnosis & medications is understood. You could look for following changes if any-

1. Any change in urine colour?

-If yes, please get in touch with a surgeon for evaluation, which could suggest kidney problems (kidney stone).

2. Any problem in passing urine or stool or any discomfort/issues in left lower limb ?

- If yes, needs an orthopaedic (Orthopaedic surgeon) or Neurological (Neurologist) evaluation.

Besides, avoid lifting heavy objects & leaning forwards.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr NIPAN CHANDRA DAS, General & Family Physician
