What Causes Pain In The Lower Back Radiating Towards Leg?

Hello please this is about a friend, he feels pains on his lower spine area.so much so that it affected his leg he now limps while walking. It started 4yrs ago.1)please what could be the cause? 2) what should be done? 3)Also who is the right professional to see on issues like this? Thanks, while waiting for your response.Christine
