What Causes Pain In The Middle Finger?

A week ago I started having some pain in my left middle finger. As the week has past it seems to have gotten worse. Now it goes from my finger into the hand and if I use this hand quit a lot the pain goes into my arm as well. It does feel better if I wear a hand wrap and I sometimes take a Tylenol for the pain. I am on the computer quit a lot during the day at my job. I am 64 years of age. Could this be arthritis or what? Thank you!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As your job requires working on computer most of the time, and as the pain is involving the wist and arm, it might be a case of Carpal tunnel syndrome apart arthritis. I highly recommend to stop typing on computer, and consult with orthopedic specialist as soon as possible. X-ray of the wrist and hand should be run to determine the right diagnosis. Meanwhile, continue taking Tylenol and apply analgesic cream locally until you see orthopedic specialist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
