What Causes Pain In The Muscles And Joints After Taking Generic Lipitor?

My husband has been taking the generic version of Lipitor since he had triple bypass surgery in October. He has been experiencing muscle pain and joint pain throughout his body. Could the Lipitor be causing these issue and is there some other statin he could try.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Lipitor is composed of 'Atorvastatin', which is a member of the medication class known as statins, which are used primarily as a lipid-lowering agent. Common side effects with the use of generic or branded Lipitor include joint pain, loose stools, indigestion, muscle pain and nausea.

The ways in which such symptoms can be reduced is either by lowering the dose if the lipid levels are under control or switching over to other statins namely Pravastatin or Fluvastatin, which were least likely to cause muscle and joint symptoms as side effects.

Kindly consult your Physician before changing the medication or reducing the dose.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
