What Causes Pain In The Neck Radiating Through The Shoulders And Back?

hello my companion has been hunched over for a few days now, he has right neck and shoulder problems plus lower back problems. he regularly takes Tylenol 3 3 times daily but that don t do much for him plus he takes a muscle relaxer at night. he has heart disease also., and pulmonary fibrosis too . I don t know what to do with him not being able to do anything, he don t want to go to the hospital because hes a heavy smoker and wants to smoke. he has had this before when he lifts anything to heavy,and we are moving next week and l need his help but not like this. he is 59 yrs old can you suggest anything. ty

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have pain in the neck radiating through the shoulders and back. Well the symptoms you mention in query can occur due to certain reasons like trapezius trigger point , muscle spasm , disc problem or working in same posture for long time . Sometimes problem in TMJ can also cause such symptoms , consult dentist for it . I would suggest you to apply warm compresses to back , neck and shoulder several times a day , take proper rest , change your posture after after every few minutest while working and take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain . Consult orthopedic surgeon if condition doesn't get better . Doctor may order CT scan , MRI ornerve conduction test . Doctor may recommend particular stretching exercises , physical therapy , muscle relaxant or anti inflammatory .
