What Causes Pain In The Ribs And Persistent Coughing?

I ve been coughing for about 3 to 4 weeks.,sometimes the cough is so hard I gag myself and almost throw up. Several days ago I coughed very hard, felt something pop and I have been in pain ever since. The pain is just below my right rib cage and extends around to my back . Coughing and sneezing is unbearable. Lying down is tough too. Sometimes there is a hot sensation in the area. Not externally. I m thinking a torn muscle/ligament. Could it be anything more serious??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Get an X ray done to rule out any rib fracture. It is frequently seen in long standing cough. In the mean time give warm compresses to the area. Take some pain killers like Tylenol.
The X ray will also help in finding any cause for the cough like lower respiratory tract infection if present.
