What Causes Pain In The Right Shoulder And Lower Neck?
I am a 68 yr old woman who was lifting 15 - 30 lbs weights at health club late Monday. I did push it a little. Tuesday morning I felt pain in my right shoulder and lower neck. Aspirin helps a little. IBuprofin does not do much. Ice relieves only some of the pain. When I don t move, it s better. Now it s now been 4 days with little improvement BUT I had to work so today is my first resting day. How long should it take for a muscle to heal?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Sandhya's Response
Hello. Lifting heavy weights can very commonly result in soft tissue injuries. This can include injury to the ligament, muscles and tendons supporting the joint. It is important to get an MRI scan to exclude the chances of any of these. Keeping the age in mind, please exclude the chances of diabetes as it can very commonly result in a frozen shoulder. Keeping the joint immobile, using a shoulder brace, avoiding any activities or lifting weights with the affected joint, applying ice packs alternating with heating pads along with over the counter medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen alternating every 4 hours would be helpful. A physical examination by a shoulder surgeon would be helpful. Keep the limb elevated at all times and a shoulder brace would help keep it immobile and avoid any unwanted movements. It would take at least a couple of weeks for the soft tissue injuries to heal. This may be delayed as the age progresses. Hope this helps.
