What Causes Pain In The Right Upper Abdominal Area And Loose Stool?

Since Friday I ve had pain in my right upper abdominal area, loose stools, swelling of both legs that has not gone down even with walking around or elevating feet. Tonight, my stool has bright red blood. Gall bladder has already been removed for stones.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, thanks for your question.

Bloody loose stools, right upper abdominal pain with swollen feet is strongly suggestive of a liver disease, possibly a cirrhosis.

First, I would advise you to see your primary care doctor to investigate by conducting an ultrasound scan of your abdomen to confirm or exclude this diagnosis.

However, you would urgently need medications including antibiotics and laxatives such as Imodium. Oral or intravenous rehydration solution is also very necessary to replace water lost in the stools.

Your doctor may also prescribe diuretics, which are drugs that help the body remove excess water, as accumulated in you feet.

Please reach me if you've got more questions.

Warm regards.
