What Causes Pain In The Shoulders While Suffering From Pleural Effusion?

My 27 year old daughter has had pleural effusions. She has been drained 5 times and has been hospitalized for over 2 weeks. The doctors cannot figure out what is wrong with her. The last time she was drained was in March and she is starting to feel sick again . It starts with bad chest pain and shooting pain to her head that is severe that it is painful to move her head this goes on for a few days and then she has pain in her shoulders and after she gets the effusion in both lungs ! Have you ever heard of anyone else with this ?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

* The shoulder pain is due to involvement of diaphragm via secondary reactive inflammation and the phrenic nerve is responsible for the same.

* The cause of recurrent effusion is a matter of extensive work up and requires patient examination, co relation of supportive reports and so forth beyond the scope of online consultation.

Hope I have answered your query.
