What Causes Pain In The Tailbone Upon Sitting?

When I went to sit down 2 days ago I missed the couch and hit my tailbone on the arm of the couch and have been in pain ever since. It hurts when I am sitting or laying down and I am wondering if this is something that will heal on it s own or if I should go in? Or if there is even anything they can do for a hurt tailbone? Thank you for your time. Megan Steinkraus

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

In general the pain can increase by day 2 to 3 , then plateau for a few days before it starts to resolve..

If the pain is very severe, you should be seen but if not then you can consider treatment at home.
This would involve--(1)using a cushion when sitting to reduce pressure
(2)warm compress to the area twice daily for 10 to 15 mins
(3)avoiding prolonged sitting
(4)anti inflammatory pain medication such as ibuprofen or naproxen

I hope this helps
