What Causes Pain In The Thumb While Having Tendonitis?

My thumb is very painful. It will break over and i m not able to straighten it out. I was told it was tendonitis. It is my well used right hand and I over worked it recently. I had a similar situation with my left hand a few years ago. I rested it and it became stable. I was told it was Hammer thumb ??? What do you think?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Your symptoms seem to be related to de Quervain's tenosynovitis. Some advice about the treatment are:
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers like Ibuprofen or Naproxen to ease the swelling.
- If that doesn’t work, you may inject steroids
- Physical therapy is recommended
- Split is also used in this situation

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi,
