What Causes Pain In The Tongue Without Any Injury?

I have pain about I/2 inch in on the side of my tongue. It is like it was sliced with a knife. It wakes me up. I then rub it and 5 to 10 minutes the pain goes away. I look and cannot see any injury, pimple, redness. Nothing. I used to think I bit my tongue and I am awakened. This has been going on for two years. Once a week and I can go a month and no pain. Now it does happen during day so that ruled out tongue biting. My dentist sees nothing. My family doctor says we could do a bunch of tests and still wonder why there was pain. Any ideas?

Thanks for your query, I have gone through your query.
The pain in the tongue can be because of burning mouth syndrome, since you are telling there are no wound or any causes. This kind of pain or burning sensation can also occur in anemia. So consult a oral physician and get it evaluated, Mean while you can use topical anesthetics like lignocaine and topical analgesics like choline salicylate.
I hope my answer will help you, take care.
