What Causes Pain In The Umbilical Area Of A 59-year-old Female?

I m a 59 year old female with pain in my umbilical area. I woke up with it this morning. I took some Maalox and a Tums, but that didn t help. I drank some hot tea, and later some ginger ale, hoping to burp and get some relief. It seems to be centered right at my umbilicus. I have a 100 degree temperature, and all day I ve slept off and on and felt lethargic. I ve had no appetite, which is very unusual for me. I m having mild back pain now, but that could be from lounging and lying around all day. I d appreciate your advice.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It could be an omphalitis or umbilical infection. As a first-line management you can take analgesics like paracetamol or aceclofenac for pain relief. If symptoms persist better to consult a general surgeon and plan for an ultrasound scan.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
