What Causes Pain In The Upper Abdomen?

I have a dull pain in upper abdomen, below sternum. Unsure if brought on by eating? Just a dull ache, sometimes worse, sometimes not noticeable. Could it be caused by fatty food? i.e. I had 1/2 of a pulled pork sandwich for lunch....Have not tried antacids. Am a breast cancer survivor, am a healthy weight and exercise regularly pv

Hi there,

I see a lot of patients in clinic due to upper abdominal pain. This could be due to a couple of reasons. The first thing I would do is really pay attention to the pain. What causes it to occur? Is it with eating? Is it after eating? How long after eating and so forth?

Pain after eating is usually due to gallstones in the gallbladder. This is usually caused by fatty foods that cause the gallbladder to contract. The simplest way of figuring this out is to eat a meal completely free of fats and see if you get the pain. If you don't have the pain and then get the pain when you eat a fatty meal, then most likely it is your gallbladder. The treatment is surgical removal of the gallbladder, and the first step in diagnosis is getting a right upper quadrant ultrasound to look for gallstones in your gallbladder.

Other causes of pain in the upper abdomen can be due to heartburn and reflux (Gastroesopheageal reflux or GERD). This can be due to a number of factors, which include increased acid production, or herniation of the lower esophageal sphincter, which causes increased acid to reflux into the esophagus. I would try taking over the counter prilosec, and seeing if this has any affect on your symptoms.

I hope this answers your questions. Please feel free to contact me should you have any further questions.
