What Causes Pain In The Upper Body, Back And Rib Cage?

Every morning I wake up to upper body pain, that feels like my back and rib cage has been a punching bag. Going to sleep, the symptom is not there, it is only there in the morning, and causes me to wake up very early due to the stiffness and pain. It quickly goes away after I get up and move about for 10-15 mins. But continuing to lay in bed, on back, side or any position, is painful especially turning around) almost like muscles are stiff. It does not matter if I have been doing yard work or sports, it is every morning, unless I take an advil or two before i go to sleep or in the middle of the night to sleep better. I am 62 yrs old. I have been having this for the last ~2 yrs.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your symptoms can be related to rheumatoid arthritis.

I suggest you do some examinations to confirm the diagnosis :
- A complete blood count.
- Rheumatoid factor level.
- A CT scan or MRI.

Meanwhile, you can take anti-inflammatory medication for the pain such as Ibuprofen.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi,
