What Causes Pain In Throat While Swallowing?

I am an 83 yr old male - relatively healthy - non-smoker -not overweight. I have developed a spot deep in my throat on the right side almost where the ear seems to be. It is painful from time to time when I swallow only and has persisted for about a week. Throat soothing lozeges have no effect!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted a short history of a 83 year old healthy non-smoker male having painful swallowing, the pain being on the right side for about a week and throat soothing lozenges have no effect. The commonest causes I can think about are as follows:
- Tonsillitis on one side
- Aphthoid ulcer on tonsil or nearby area
- Jugulo-diagastric lymph node inflammation
- Hyoid syndrome
- Eagle's syndrome wherein the inflammation is at the long styloid process.

This can be diagnosed by the following ways. Consult your doctor to discuss these points, relevant examination and investigations. All these will give proper diagnosis and thus prescription based proper treatment. If required take a second opinion of an ENT Surgeon.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
