What Causes Pain In Toe With Redness And Swelling?

My right big toe started hurting me yesterday, I felt like I wanted to crack the joint. In the middle of the night I woke up with pain, slightly red and swollen and I cannot bend it? I do not have a temperature but I want to be sure it is not strep in the toe.
