What Causes Pain In Upper Abdomen And While Taking Deep Breath?

I am a normally healthy 54 year old female. Just had a sudden onset of severe pain in lower chest/upper abdomen region that traveled to my neck. The pain was worse with deep breaths. This episode lasted about 10 minutes, then went away. Is this anything I should be concerned about?

Hi,

Yes, sudden onset of severe pain in the upper abdomen that travels to the neck and is worse with deep breaths could be a sign of a serious condition and should be evaluated by a medical professional as soon as possible. It could be due to a number of conditions such as heart attack, pulmonary embolism, gallbladder disease, or gastrointestinal issues such as gastritis or peptic ulcer disease.

A physical examination and possibly further testing such as an ECG, chest X-ray, or blood tests may be needed to determine the underlying cause of the symptoms. It is important not to ignore these symptoms and seek medical attention immediately.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
